S2E17 Banned Books Graphic Novels Mash Up

S2E17 Banned Books Graphic Novels Mash Up

We are technically still on a break as we figure out our crazy lives, but we couldn’t let Banned Book week be missed.  In honor of Banned Books Week, we are returning to this genre again.  However, with a twist! Both of our choices are in graphic novel version!  Hey, that also means we can double dip and cross graphic novels off the list.

This week’s episode also gets us one step closer to completing the 2018 Modern Mrs. Darcy Reading Challenge.

What We Are Drinking

We are drinking a tea from September’s Sipsby box.  We have talked about Sipsby sooo much on here! Have you tried it yet??  They provide you with four teas to try, a reusable muslin tea bag, and disposable bags (amounting to 45 cups of tea). This month’s box arrived while Cori was fighting off a start of the school year bug and had both an immunity blend AND a ginger blend recommended for drinking with colds and sore throats.  How on earth did they know what was needed?? Head over to Sipsby to fill out a profile AND get $5 off your first box!

We tried the Lemon Yaupon from the Asheville Tea Company.  It wasn’t one of our favorites. There was not much of a lemony flavor, and the actual tea flavor was not one we were excited about.

What We Are Reading

Kyrie picked Howl by Allen Ginsburg.  It was a bit of a visual adventure.  Neither of us are sure we still understand this poem, but okay.  We can say we read and discussed it. That counts for something, right?

Cori chose to revisit a childhood favorite, A Wrinkle In Time by Madeline L’Engle.  We discuss whether it stood the test of time reading it as an adult and what we thought about reading it as a graphic novel.  Tune in to also hear about a cool connection between Arizona and this book.

Sponsor

Yep, it’s still us.  Give us money and let us give you nice things in return!  Visit our GoFundMe site to learn how you can support our ongoing costs and operations as we head into year two.  Thank you to all that have donated so far. You rock!

Coming Up Next

We continue working toward finishing the 2018 Modern Mrs Darcy Reading Challenge by revisiting books written by favorite authors.  The publishing date is a work in progress as we figure out our lives so thanks for your patience and bearing with us!

Kyrie picked In the Woods by Tana French

Cori picked Peachtree Road by Anne River Siddons

Episode 10: We like banned books and we cannot lie

Episode 10: We like banned books and we cannot lie

This week, Kyrie and Cori discuss the Banned Books they selected, as well as some information on what causes a book to be banned, example of other banned books, and a brief history of banned books!

During their discussion, Kyrie and Cori drink Numi Earl Grey tea.

Kyrie picked The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall, which seems to be a semi-autobiographical telling of Hall’s life and experience. It’s a hefty read, with very small font, and takes a lot of time and energy to get into. Victorian style writing is very different than what we’ve grown accustomed to.

Cori picked Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, which is a classic sci fi story about banned books.  It seemed pretty fitting given the genre, and it was a classic she has been wanting to read for a while.  It takes you to a futuristic world where instead of putting out fires, firemen set fires when they find people with books, which are no longer allowed.

Make sure you subscribe to their podcast to get updates and check them out on their social media feeds!  If you like what you’re hearing, go over to Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts and leave a review to help them reach a broader audience of book and tea lovers!  Read along with us and partake in the discussion via our blog or Facebook! Some other banned books mentioned today:

The Bible

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Call of the Wild

Of Mice and Men

The Chocolate War

The Harry Potter series

Coming up next week, Kyrie and Cori explore the genre of magical realism, a favourite of both of theirs.

Kyrie’s Pick: The Girl with Glass Feet by Ali Shaw
Cori’s Pick: Exit West by Mohsin Hamid
